Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

If there are a huge number of names for the surname I am research, how do I make the results more manageable?

If you do a surname search for a very popular name such as Smith, you will get a huge list of results. In the case of Smith there are over 15,000 results.

The search input routine has a number of options that will help to reduce the number of hits.

For both the forename and surname parts of a search there are the options for exact names. If you choose NO for either of these then the search routine will return other similar similar names. Thus, if you have too many results, select the YES option.

Another way to reduce the number of search results is to specify either a specific country or area.

Once you have your search results, the surname search routine allows you to select six different ways in which the results will be displayed:

Cemetery name order

With the Cemetery name order the names are listed alphabetically in cemetery name order. If you know the name of the cemetery then it would be better to go direct to that cemetery's page.

Country/area order

This option is useful if you are just interested in people from either a paricular country or area within that country.

DOB year order

This option is useful if you know the year in which the person was born but no other details.

DOD year order

This option displays the results in the year of death order. It is useful when you know the year of death.

Forename order

This is the default list order.

Grave order

This is similar to the country/area list order but instead of being in alphabetic forename order it is in grave order.
